Earlier this year, GreenSky Capital Inc. (“GreenSky”) launched the Early Venture Evaluation (“EVE”) Internship Program. EVE is designed to expose students to the full range of the “deep” due diligence process at venture capital firms. With guidance from GreenSky team members, graduate students prepare a draft due diligence report on a single company that GreenSky has engaged as a potential investee. They present their findings internally to the partners at GreenSky, and a final version of the report is made available to GreenSky’s co-investors.
GreenSky Principal Greg Stewart said of the program, “EVE provides students with unique, real world experience in an investment situation, and offers a high level of responsibility. It is an important component of our due diligence process and our expectations of the students are high. Thus far, we could not be happier with the results.”
To date, EVE has engaged with five students across six projects, and has brought one program participant on for a full-time contract. EVE is itself run by Neil Peet, a recent MBA graduate who first joined GreenSky as a part-time intern while in school. “We engage with graduate students who are pursuing careers in business, but have relevant experience in the industry of the company in question,” said Peet, “They bring not only high intelligence and a strong work ethic, but also access to knowledge and contacts that we may not have otherwise. For example, a student with media and advertising experience analyzed a new tool for advertisers; another brought in insights on water remediation technologies based on experience in the O&G industry.”
Former EVE intern Wilson Wong reflected on the program: “Working with GreenSky allowed me to put my eight years of experience with Celestica to use in investigating an interesting new electronics product. I gained experience in venture capital, and I had the gratification of knowing I had a real impact on an investment decision.”
The EVE program has relationships with Rotman School of Management program in Toronto and the McMaster school of Engineering & Computer Science in Hamilton; GreenSky is actively seeking additional partnerships with graduate schools in the Greater Toronto Area.
